Wow! Prices are on the up and up apparently. I see a couple badges that usually don't come with a sewing kit like this, but thats about it. A fairly normal kit as far as I can tell. Final price...$81.00 Shocked

I sold one last month...way better stocked and in way better condition, but less the badges...and all I got was $36.00 hmmm Where are all these people when I sell??

Not all the loons are on eBay. I came across more than a few at the show in Etobicoke. Should have taken photos of the offending prices but I forgot my camera in the car.

Canadian Issue War Medal $145.00 Italy Star $90.00 RCEME Cap badge only $80.00 CVSM and War Medal Pair, $225.00 WOW what a bargain.

I was very very reserve this trip in that I only picked up a "cone" for $15.00

Prices do seem high, but I wonder what effect the price of silver bullion is having? Canadian medals are about 1 1/4 oz, and silver is about $37 Cdn, so the scrap value is about $45 per. That sure isn't what they were asking, but is it a factor in the price?
A fellow sets up once a month in a mall here and advertises for scrap silver. Un-named Second World War service medals are often sold for their scrap value...

Bill the current going rate for a War Medal is about 35.00, Italy Star is about 25.00 (No silver in these) CVSM W/Clasp 45.00 At most a mounted CVSM and War Medal should not exceed 90.00 but are available for like 60.00

I must say that these prices were top. Most dealers were pretty reasonable but there was more than a few over priced. As for the RCEME badge. I almost fell over.

Hi Cliff, The going price was about $35,or so I thought. I had a table at a small antique show about 6 weeks ago. They had an evaluator doing appraisals, and a fellow brought in some medals for a valuation. She put a value of $90 on two Second World War service medals. So I asked her what the deal was, and she said that as far as she was concerned, the primary factor was the bullion price. She said that since there were so many of the medals around, there was little historic merit in them and since they were un-named, there was no heirloom value.
This raises an interesting question. If a value of $35 is the retail on the silver medals, some individuals may simply buy them up to sell them for scrap.

    Hi Bill

Cliff is pretty much on the mark but I sure don't pay $35 for a WM. Shocked

The thing about scrap silver value and Cdn WW2 medals (those un-named ones that is) is that only the CVSM is Sterling (92.5%). That is paying $30US Scrap right now. The WM and Cdn Def Med are only 80% and don't scrap out that well. US$27 is a top price for that stuff. Pure Silver (99.99%pure) is only paying about US$36. All prices are based on a 30 gram Ounce.I don't know how your Mall guy can pay that out for them and remain solvent!! I suppose the odd DFC or MC he gets in without anyone knowing the better may make it all wortwhile (I am not casting dispersions on your Mall guy)

... If the silver tests at less than .925 - for instance .800, of course the price for scrapping it will be significantly less...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Scrappers generally know this purity difference. This erroneous/over-inflated pricing of common Cdn WW2 medals is caused by some vendors etc play up the scrap value to their own advantage, I feel. Luckily I don't buy from them. I get Defs for 25-30 and WMs for 20-25 when I need to.

And my own OMG EBay dealio was getting about US$187 for a couple of IR Afg patches!! Cloth is it's own world, eh Bill? Too rich for my blood.

    regards
    Darrell
