Got This as a Trade Empty Got This as a Trade

    Post by noiseboyz3 Mon Jul 18, 2011 8:04 pm

I offered a gentleman I met at my yard sale a Lee Enfield blade bayonet for this badge as a trade. Imagine my surprise when I saw the cap badge was an officer's and that it is sterling silver.

Here is what I have found out so far. The 229th started recruiting in early 1916 and went overseas about a year later. Shortly after arriving in England it was absorbed by the 15th Reserve Battalion. It only had one Commanding Officer and depending on the source you check had either 10 or 17 officers. The badge is in excellent condition and is marked Geo H Lees as well as Crichtons, Moose Jaw and is also marked Sterling.

Could anyone tell me how to insert an image?

    Thanks.

If anyone has any information about this badge or the battalion it belongs to as well as any idea of the value of the badge I would be interested in hearing from you. I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Cheers.

    Hi noiseboyz3

    Nice badge.

If that's you who has it on ebay currently, you should have put it in the WW1 section instead. If it's not yours, they are extremely similar.

At least you'll find the value you were looking for. Good luck.

Just a note on unit strengths. The number of officers that served with the battalion is likely higher than those quoted in the references. That number was at a specific point in time. Officers may have been transferred, sent on course or detached for any number of reasons. Some may have enlisted, but remained with a depot or training center.
Officers' badges were private purchase, and some officers acquired more than one badge, while others may not have been able to afford the badges and did not acquire a sterling example. There is a reference to the 229th badge being made in silver plate.
    Link to auction.

I've seen the officers pattern to the 229th in gold plate as well.

Thanks for the information, Darrell, Bill and GCR817. Good eye, Darrell (ever been in Recce Squadron?); that is my listing on ebay. I will edit it and put it in the right place. I will also edit the listing to state that those comments are my "thoughts" as I have no proof. Cheers.

    Hi Paul

    (ever been in Recce Squadron?)

Only about 15 different times in 3 different Reg Fc Armd Units. rock on

Long ago and far away I used to push Lynxes out the back of Hercs and then follow too!!(helmets on for war stories!!)

I suspect you may know me if you have any connection to Armd Reccein the last........26 years or so. Wink

    Hey Darrell

No connection to Armd Recce though I was with the Airborne in the early/mid eighties. We did meet at a show in Great Village. You explained the significance between a horse and a goat on a Guidon. I am moving to Ottawa next week so if you are looking for any items let me know and I will keep an eye out for them. Cheer.

    Hi Paul

Gotchya. I actually recall that!!

I suspect we did serve in the AB BG together at one time.

Have a good move and thanks for the offer.

Stay in touch. You're going to see a BIG difference in the Ontario Shows compared to Great Village. 8)

    regards
    Darrell
