    Ammo boxes - Page 2 Empty H51 Mk I

Post by edstorey Tue Oct 14, 2014 10:25 am

A nice find! Ammox boxes always seem get repurposed by the military as they are handy for so many tasks, so it is not uncommon to see them with markings that may not reflect their original contents.

Who was the manufacturer of your box?

Two pounder ammo can. Took me a while to figure out what it was. Bought as a ration container. Inserts that held the cartridges are gone unfortunately.

Ammo boxes - Page 2 Empty Ammo Can

Post by edstorey Wed Jun 22, 2016 4:55 pm

I have one of these items and I have not been able to identify it. What documentation do you have that confirms it was for 2-Pdr ammunition?

Ammo boxes - Page 2 Empty Ammunition Boxes

Post by edstorey Wed Jun 22, 2016 7:34 pm

An interesting discussion, but no substantial proof was provided in the text. The system employed by the British and Canadians for supplying ammunition involved a series of containers and labels that were all identified with number codes such as for example B116 metal 3-Inch Mortar Bomb boxes or H29 wooden Small Arms Ammunition crates. If this metal container is for 2-Pdr ammunitions, then why does it not follow this system and have the box type code embossed on it when the other containers do?

True, I guess the only way to find out is to ask the members discussing the item in question. In a separate thread there it shows the box/can with the 2 pounder tube inserts, but now I can't find it. Also showed how the ammo cans were stored. It is the only reference to these that I have ever found.

Apparently two of these 8 round tins were inside a 16 round box that was embossed C 207. If these 8 round tins were a part of the interior packaging would they still have a type code embossed? Were the cardboard tubes that each individual round was packaged in identified with a code as well?

Yes, both the C198 and C207 wooden boxes held 16 rounds in two No. 9 containers. Good question if the interior containers were embossed. Yes, the cardboard tubes were each identified with a code as well. If the interior containers were not embossed, then the key is finding an image that illustrates the interior No. 9 container.

I've been trying to find a photo of a 2 pdr gun in action hoping to see the ammo packaging but haven't been successful so far. It's just a matter of time I'm sure.

Best part is that they weren’t painted post war. Most of the Canadian boxes I have seen were painted for use with dummy grenades.

I found this box for sale today.

I found it very interesting considering the use of .303 with Browning links and 500 round belts

Any ideas when it would be from and for?

Here are some shots of my c207 ammunition can for the 2pdr along with the smaller tins that go inside. The labels and can are clearly marked for the 2 pounder.
