CEF Memorial Plaque

Picked up my first one today at a local auction. After a bit of searching it turns out he served in the 49th Bn. and enlisted in Calgary. Died September 29, 1918 and buried at Drummond Cemetery, Raillencourt.

Nice find! I only have one also, picked it up at an antiques store...paid $150...I've always thought I over paid!

Death Penny? Death Penny? What the heck is a Death Penny? What you have there is a Memorial Plaque, NOT a Death Penny.

Pretty COOL. Of all the items I currently have in my collection, I no longer have a Memorial Plaque.

Lol! Sorry, I just describe them the same way the old timers do. When I was really young, an older neighbor showed me his brothers penn...umm...plaques and ever since then I was fascinated by them. At that age I thought they were real coins of some sort. Always wanted one even though I generally shy away from WWI collectibles.

Just like, 'Brodie' or 'Doughboy' for the Mk I Helmet, 'Turtle' for the Mk III Helmet, 'Boonie Badges' for Combat Cap Badges and 'Smellie' for the No. 1 MK III SMLE Rifle; 'Death Penny' for the Memorial Plaque is another one of those slang terms that for whatever reason just seems to see continual use.

I can't seem to find any other CEF plaques(see previous post-lol!) for sale online so I'm not sure what they bring now. I got this one for $175 after some intense bidding. I bought it for my collection, not to resell, so I'm not bothered if I paid too much.

I found your PLAQUE online. Looks like Mr. Torr died the same day as Mr. Cool.

Hmmm..Interestingly on his attestation papers, his next of Kin is listed as " Lt.-Col. E.G. Mason" who was the CO of the 50th Battalion, the unit he first joined in 1915.

Thanks for looking up the circumstances of death...I was going to research this fellow a bit more, but fell short of time.

Looking at the 50th Bn. Nominal roll, it shows a couple men with Mason as the next of kin. What would be the circumstances regarding this? Perhaps homeless or no next of kin at the time of enlistment? Another death register has a relative in B.C.

I have that saved on my other laptop...will post soon.

OK, I'll ask.......since I've never used this Register before, how do you find your guy? I went through all the microform numbers listed and IF they are alphabetical they only go to the letter S. My guy Albert Torr comes after that......or I'm missing something and I hope someone will point out the obvious for me?

Not sure, looks like they haven't gotten past the S's yet.
