Essex Regiment (Tank) button Empty Essex Regiment (Tank) button

    Post by sarge5020 Mon Oct 31, 2011 7:25 am

Does anybody have an Essex Regiment (Tank) button in their collection? If so, would you mind posted a photo? In the book "Black Beret - A History of the Windsor Regiment (RCAC) 1936-2006" by McNorgan and Lock, on page 147 there is the original drawing of the proposed buttons. No one that I have talked to can say for sure if they ever saw one but they are sure that they were produced.

    Cheers,

Is this a "baret" pin, or a uniform vest button you are interested in?

My G-Father was in the Essex tank.

I'm looking for the buttons from the uniform jackets. Was your Grandfather George Yule Masson, the first Commanding Officer?
Here is a photo of the proposed badges, I'm looking for the button with ER TANK and CANADA on it.

Yes, Col G.Y. Masson was my g-father. My dad has a framed display with some Essex Tank items therein. I will get in touch with him and pass on the picture.

My daughter is doing a project on "significant Canadians", and decided to research more about GYM. This is what had brought me to the website, and your post.

I will reply when I have more information.

    cheers!

That'sgreat. Have you got a copy of the Regiemnt's history book? There is quite a few photos of your Grandfather in there. If you want one, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the Regiemnt. Do you or your Dad live in Windsor?

No I do not have a copy of the Reg. History book.

Please put me in touch with the team.

No, my dad does not live in Windsor (Markham now)
but we are in touch with his brothers, both of whom served (one in the US navy, the other with the RCAF in the late 40s and into the 50s.)

Please send me some contact information (stephen.masson AT tdsb.on.ca)

    Thx.

I checked with my dad, we both recognized the hat badge. He thinks he might have couple of the other items in a "keep sake" box at home. (he is snow birding now)

He also looked at the photo, and thought that it might be GYM's hand writing on the page. GYM was an architect and tended to print in italics like that shown in the photo.

Again, I will keep you aprised of anything I find out.

    cheers,

Just a note guys. Regimental buttons, even if approved, were not made during the war. There is a good chance the design was approved, but no contract was let.

Bill, that may be true but if there is an example, I would like to see it. I have not found any photographic evidence that they were produced but I am trying to follow every lead I can find. Lt Col Masson designed the badges and with luck, there might be one with the family or there might be evidence that they were never made. The badges for the Regiment were approved and manufactured before the war. The arrival of the first batch of badges was in August of 1938. There is no mention of buttons though.

It's hard to prove that something does not exist, only that it does but you need to find one first. hmmm

    John,

Do you have any photos of the Essex Regt wearing the black beret? This should have a patch of MacGregor tartan. I would like to find an example to photograph.

Here's a photo of Lt Col G.Y. Masson wearing the Essex Regiment (Tank) badge with the tartan background. I'm told that the tartan was only for the guys that had priviously served with the Scottish before joining the Essex Tanks.

The 1943 Dress Regs don't specify this limitation and, in the interests of uniformity, I think everyone was entitled.
Do you know where I might find an example?

I've seen a bunch of photos from that era but this is the only photo of someone wearing the tartan patch. I'll post a photo of Lt Col Masson wearing the Essex Scottish badge with the black beret. It musbe nice being the boss.

William, this is the first time I've seen the ER(T) badge on a Essex Scottish glengarry Many of the original members of the \regiment came from the Essex Scottish so it's certainly not unreasonable that this combination exists. Mind if I ask what your grandfather's full name was? I'd like to research his service in the Essex Tank.

My grandfather was William Heaton, no middle name, born in Sheffield, England, lived in Cleveland, Ohio, joined Canadian army about 1939, not sure how long he was in, died early 1940s.

I have sent a request to the Canadian military archives for information.

The glengarry & uniform is exactly how my father gave them to me. He is dead now so I cannot ask him more. There is no one in the family left to ask.

    Thanks for your help.

Interesting. The Regimental history book, The Black Beret, lists only one Heaton. A Trooper FJ Heaton, Regimental number A116374, joined on 3 November, 1942. I'll try to dig through the archives and see if I can find any more information for you.
I'm always interested in hearing stories from those who came before us.

    Cheers,
    John
